How do I use it?
- Light — switch it on and look at the nail before you cut.
- Sliver — cut 1–2 mm at a time, never one big cut.
- Spot — light nails: stop 2–3 mm before the pink. Dark nails: stop when a small, dark, shiny dot appears in the cut face.
- Smooth — flip to the grinder, 2–3 seconds per touch, to round the edge.
If you nick the quick: press styptic powder or cornstarch onto the tip for a few minutes. Still bleeding after 5–10 minutes? Call your vet.
My dog has black nails. Will this work?
No light shines through a black nail — on any clipper. So use the groomer's Stop-Dot™ check: take thin slivers and look at the cut face under the light. Chalky white means keep going, a grey centre means slow down, and a small, dark, shiny dot means stop.
My dog is tiny or hates nail trims. Will it work?
Yes. The grinder cap has a small port for tiny nails and dewclaws. For nervous dogs, put out the lick mat, clip first, then smooth for just a few seconds per nail. One paw is a good day.

How can I make nail trimming more comfortable?
Choose a calm place, let your dog get familiar with the tool, and handle their paws gently with treats. Trim small amounts at a time and take breaks — the lick mat in the Nail Day Kit helps keep them busy. If you're unsure how much to trim, ask a groomer or veterinarian to show you.
Will my dog be afraid of the grinder?
Some dogs are unsure of the sound at first. You only use the grinder for a few seconds per nail after clipping, so there's no long buzzing session. Let your dog hear it switched on from a distance first, with treats. If your dog is very sound-sensitive, start with the clipper alone and add the grinder later.
Why use the grinder after clipping?
Clipping leaves a sharp, flat edge that can snag blankets or scratch skin. A few seconds with the grinder rounds it off — and lets you take off a tiny bit more without cutting close to the quick.
Is The Lantern™ suitable for small dogs, puppies or cats?
Yes. The grinder cap has small, medium and large ports, including one for tiny nails and dewclaws. The light works especially well on the clear nails many small dogs, puppies and cats have. With cats, keep sessions very short.
